Douyin is not available in your default App Store. It doesn’t appear on Google Play outside of a handful of countries. And if you try to register with a foreign phone number, it may or may not work — depending on when you try.
Despite all of this, you can install and use Douyin from outside China. This guide covers every step: iOS, Android, account setup, navigating the Chinese interface, and logging in on a computer.
Wait — Douyin Is Not TikTok
Before anything else: Douyin (抖音) and TikTok are two separate apps made by the same company (ByteDance) but designed for entirely different audiences. TikTok is for international users. Douyin is for mainland China — different content, different algorithm, different registration system.

Can You Actually Use Douyin Outside China?
Yes — but Douyin is deliberately designed as a domestic platform. A ByteDance executive confirmed publicly that “an overseas IP address does not represent an overseas user.” The platform is not built to welcome international access, which explains why it’s absent from international app stores and why registration barriers exist.
That said, workarounds are available and work consistently. The steps below are based on hands-on testing across iOS, Android, and desktop.
Note for Southeast Asia users: If you’re in Singapore or Malaysia, Douyin may already be available directly through the Google Play Store. Search there first before following the Android guide below.
How to Install Douyin on iPhone (iOS)
Method 1: Sign In with Apple ID (Recommended)
This is the most reliable path for iPhone users. It works across iPhone, iPad, and macOS with one account — no Chinese phone number needed. From personal testing, this method is stable across sessions and doesn’t require re-authentication when switching between devices.
Step 1: Switch your App Store region to mainland China
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap your name → Media & Purchases
- Tap View Account
- Tap Country/Region → Change Country or Region
- Select China Mainland
- When asked for a payment method, choose None — Douyin is free, no Chinese payment info needed
- Enter any address in mainland China (a hotel or shopping mall address works fine)
Step 2: Download Douyin
Search for “抖音” or “Douyin” in the App Store and install.
Step 3: Sign in with Apple ID
Open Douyin. On the login screen, look for the option labeled “第三方登录” (third-party login). Tap the Apple icon and sign in with your Apple ID. Done — your account now works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Method 2: Phone Number Registration
Phone number registration is possible but inconsistent. Douyin opens and closes international SMS sign-ups in waves with no predictable schedule. Some periods, foreign numbers receive the verification code without issue. Other periods, the code never arrives regardless of retries.
To try: tap the +86 country code selector on the registration screen, switch to your country code, enter your number, and request the SMS. If the code doesn’t arrive within 2 minutes, stop — fall back to Apple ID instead.
How to Install Douyin on Android
Android is more straightforward. You download an APK (installation file — the Android equivalent of an app package) directly from Douyin’s official website.
Step 1: Download the APK
On your Android phone, go to douyin.com in your browser. Scroll to the bottom and tap the download button. The file saves to your Downloads folder.
Step 2: Allow installation from unknown sources
When you tap the downloaded file, Android will show a security warning — this is normal for any app installed outside the Play Store.
- Tap Settings when the warning appears
- Toggle on Allow from this source
- Go back and tap the APK file to install
This is standard Android behavior, not a sign that Douyin is unsafe. Downloading directly from douyin.com (ByteDance’s official domain) keeps the risk low. Avoid APK mirrors on third-party sites.
Step 3: Open and register
Once installed, open Douyin and follow the account creation steps below.
Note for Samsung, Xiaomi, or Huawei users: Douyin may already be available in the Samsung Galaxy Store, Xiaomi App Market, or Huawei AppGallery depending on your region — worth checking before downloading the APK.
Create Your Account — Don’t Skip This
Many guides say you can browse Douyin without registering. That’s true, but the experience is severely limited.
Without an account you cannot:
- Follow creators
- Like or save videos
- Access watch history
- Copy a video’s share link — the step you need to download Douyin videos
The share/copy link function is buried inside a menu that only appears reliably when you’re logged in. If you’re on Douyin to find and save content, registration is not optional.
Use Apple ID on iOS or phone number on Android. If phone registration fails — which it sometimes does for foreign numbers — iOS users can fall back to Apple ID. Android users who hit walls can try linking via a WeChat or QQ account if they have one.

The entire app is in Mandarin. Here are the buttons you’ll use most:

To copy a video link: tap 分享 (Share) on any video → in the share panel, tap 复制链接 (Copy Link). This is the URL you’ll paste into SnapVideo to download the video.
How to Use Douyin on Your Computer
Once you have a Douyin account on your phone, go to douyin.com on any browser — no desktop install needed.
The web version lets you browse, search, and watch on a larger screen. Finding specific videos and copying share links is easier on desktop than on mobile.
QR code login — 6 steps:
- Open douyin.com on your computer. A QR code appears on the login screen.
- Open the Douyin app on your phone
- Tap the magnifying glass (search icon) at the top
- Tap the QR code scanner icon in the top-right corner
- Point your phone at the QR code on your screen
- When the QR code turns to a checkmark, tap 确认登录 (Confirm Login) on your phone
The QR login works every time once your phone account is set up. No password needed.

FAQ
Do I need a VPN to use Douyin outside China? Not necessarily. The Apple ID method on iOS and the official APK from douyin.com on Android both work without a VPN in most countries. A VPN is only needed if your ISP blocks Douyin’s servers — uncommon outside of countries with strict filtering. If the app is slow or won’t connect, a VPN connected to a mainland China server can help.
